CBD Oil in Orthopedics

The opioid epidemic has resulted in many patients as well as doctors considering natural remedies to alleviate chronic pain. Currently a hot topic for this is the use of CBD oil. Many people do not fully understand or know what CBD is and how to purchase it safely.

Cannabidiol the scientific name for CBD is a non-psychotropic cannabis related product. Hemp derived CBD oil does not contain any THC meaning there is no “high” from using this alternative. CBD oil with no THC content is legal in all 50 states regardless of their marijuana laws. However, there is room for mistakes if this product is bought at a dispensary. Often patients may go in and have a misunderstanding of the actual type of CBD product they are purchasing. This product is considered a supplement and it is very important to know that the FDA currently does not regulate any CBD oil that you may find in stores. When purchasing this product, one should be assured that the CBD oil is hemp-derived with no THC content. If there is THC, then this can result in a positive drug test. Still, some products that state there is no THC content have been tested and shown to contain THC. Without FDA regulation, purity is not guaranteed.

The science behind CBD oil is still not well understood. At this time CBD is most commonly being used to treat seizure disorders and neuropathic pain with some anxiety treatments being developed. Current studies show evidence to support CBD being use for muscle pain. There is still no clear evidence to say that CBD oil is beneficial for post-operative pain.  CBD oil has strong anti-inflammatory properties, possibly leading to an alternative for some orthopedic patients. There are numerous studies being done to help health care providers understand the benefits and proper usage of this alternative treatment. Once there is conclusive scientific evidence, then our patients will hopefully be able to safely purchase FDA regulated products that provide pain relief.
